OUGD601 / COP3 / Initial Presentation & Feedback

I began my presentation by mentioning two working titles:

'How Can Graphic Design - An Increasingly Digital Process - retain Aura?'

'The Work of Design in the digital Age of (Re)production'

It wasn't until mentioning Dadaism and showing my example of a Skeuomorphic piece in the form of Arcade Fire's 'The Suburbs' virtual spinning record that it became clear what I was banging on about.

Amber recommended looking at 'The Medium is the Massage' to focus more on what the use of these in-between, hybrid mediums actually mean to the audience.

Joe Lindley then talked about his dissertation which concerns 'Lo-fi Design', something that definitely crosses over into the territory that I'm looking at. We discussed the incredible Dada designs that have predicted some current trends with incredible accuracy.

It then occurred to me that Dadaism worked on the basis of getting rid of Aura by including everyday objects such as train tickets in their work, whereas since the advent of digital, flat design, Aura can now be conjured through those exact means! Meaning... historical context has affected the meaning of Aura.

I also mentioned a book, 'Mid-fi' which as it happens hasn't been a huge help to the project but the group loved the title and what it stands for as a bridge between digital and analogue.
