Introduction
· Brief history of handmade and context around it. What I’m exploring. Will there be a specific ending / resolution? Key Texts Explored
Technology – ‘Necessity and Aesthetic’
· Gutenberg’s press (1440)
· Benjamin era, Letterpress
· Screenprint, Warhol
· Ivan Sutherland – Sketchpad (1963)
· Present day, once necessary technology is used for aesthetic / auratic purpose.
Mistakes – ‘The Joy of Inconsistency’
· Aura through human error – compare to flat design
· Distinct examples of mistakes becoming final product
Digital and Tangible in Harmony
· Skeuomorphism
· Integration of both
· Post, process orientated world – free to choose method but largely digital end product.
Conclusion
· Why handmade graphics work in the real world / appreciation of the handmade.
· Reflection on traditional print lasting because of aura.
Points made about the chapters:
- Steer clear of using the term 'mistake'. The idea of the human fingerprint on work giving aura is sound but the word 'mistake' gives it a different connotation and we also noted that no work is truly a mistake.
- Intro does not need a brief history section, as the first chapter will cover the history of processes.
- Technology section should keep referring back to Benjamin as a base.
- Is skeuomorphism worth delving into? Could be tangential and inconsequential.
- Emphasis on photoshop making screenprinting easier whilst letterpress can teach a typography student so much about leading, baselines etc.
