Studio Brief 2 / Theory Into Practice / Page Spread Designs

The publication is a mock exhibition leaflet, putting perspective and context onto my 'exhibition' which currently consists of the one screenprint version of Rothko's No. 14, 1960.

The cover is very simple, stating the title, date and place for the proposed exhibition. I brought in the Tate logo to add a more convincingly official look.

The provisional name for the exhibition is Reappropriate: Fine Art as Graphic Design as Fine Art.

The premise is the taking of a piece of fine art, recreating it through a graphic design process and then re showing the piece as a piece of fine art.

I want the proposed exhibition to raise questions, as apposed to presenting a definitive answer or conclusion (of which I don't think there is such a thing).

I've interspersed pages of theory/body copy within 6 or so examples of the work that would be on show. I feel that a leaflet accompanying an exhibition should give context and reasoning from the artist.

Here I introduce the idea of the show.

Here I go on in more detail, questioning the experiment's validity and where it leaves us. I hope this self-questioning dispels at least some concern about my naivety at tackling such a subject.

I have included quotes from artists that are also featured in my essay. Rothko's above is there to bring forward one of my points that if all of the components are recreated - albeit by different means - will the resulting piece not bring on the same emotions that he claims are reached here?

The spreads all stick to the same strict grid layout although could be played around with more to create an informal feel. I do however feel that the serious tone of voice throughout the project lends itself to a strict, formal layout and the serious vibe should continue throughout the project.
