A key synthesis within this project is the learning of a new tool in illustrator, referencing Dormer and Jury within my essay. They point to a future wherein tools and craft must be embraced.
Learning a digital tool or craft such as the Scribble tool is an interesting middle ground between a hands on learning experience and allowing the computer to do all of the thinking.
1. A shape is put through the scribble tool, producing this path that the plotter can follow.
If the Outside Path Overlap is then increased, we see a very interesting swooping of lines start to appear.
The same process but with a sphere.
If the path Overlap is pushed up enough, huge patterns such as this can appear. The erratic nature of the tool needs a designer in order to extract the few nice, interesting shapes from amongst the tangle!
The shapes can then be flattened and squashed until more interesting shapes occur. Interestingly, the shape you see is not fixed and changing small details such as rotation completely changes the path the plotter will follow.
Eventually I stumbled on shapes such as this, with smooth curves contrasted by sharp, straight lines.
