Channel 4 Idents - A Masterstroke in Subtlety

The Channel 4 idents between programmes are the perfect example of 'simple' continuous branding which is meant for no other reason than to fill the gap inbetween the television programmes. In many ways they are remarkably similar to photo frame backing paper.
  • They don't strictly have to be well thought about, designed or executed, after all, it's the programmes people have tuned in to watch. However, it is this non necessity that makes the fact that these are well thought through, design and executed even more impressive.
  • The simple idea, the brief flash of the '4' is self referencial to the idea of an ident itsself. An ident should - and in most cases does - in theory pass one by, but Channel 4 one upped every other station by putting so much work into something which is so often overlooked. The slick continuity builds the brand further with the different scenes representing the different styles of programming Channel 4 has to offer.
Learning from this extremely successful example and taking it into my visual research for my photo frame backings, I need to ensure continuity, quality and interest.

Nobody noticed idents until something incredible came along. I hope to be able to say the same thing for photo frame backing paper.
